Navigating Complexity: Wayfinding for a Landmark Workplace

Challenge
Lockton, the world’s largest privately owned insurance broker, faced a significant challenge in their London headquarters. Spanning three expansive floor plates of 39,000 sq ft each, the workspace lacked branding, orientation, and a clear sense of place. With hot-desking, diverse user dynamics, and over 50 meeting rooms alongside large open-plan areas, the environment often created confusion rather than cohesion. The need was clear: to bring clarity, cohesion, and ease of navigation to a complex and heavily used workplace.

Solution
Our approach focused on creating clarity and confidence for every user navigating Lockton’s vast workspace. We introduced clear floor designation supported by a bold colour-coding system, ensuring each level had its own distinct identity. Within floors, zoning strategies separated different working areas, making the space more intuitive and user-friendly. Orientation points, including floor plans, provided instant clarity, while a carefully considered naming rationale gave the 50+ meeting rooms a sense of character and logic. This was all supported by a cohesive suite of signage, illustrations, and manifestations.

Results

The scheme delivers not only practical navigation but also a stronger sense of place across the headquarters, giving staff and visitors greater confidence in moving around while reinforcing a clear and unified identity throughout the building.
